The Future is Bright
Dr. Linda Edwards provides updates from the college.
Greetings and welcome to this edition of Academic Matters, a quarterly newsletter that provides exciting updates from the UF College of Medicine – Jacksonville.
In our 100-year history of training physicians, we have laid a strong foundation as an academic institution in Northeast Florida and South Georgia. This foundation upholds us as we educate and nurture the next generation of health care professionals. It is because of your continued dedication to academic excellence, commitment to medical advancement, patient care, and discovery that we continue that legacy. I am excited to forge this path with you — the best is yet to come.
The University of Florida footprint is expanding in Jacksonville. Recently, I was honored to host a luncheon for the UF provost and academic deans from Gainesville. The UF provost, Dr. J. Scott Angle, and Kurt Dudas, UF vice president for Jacksonville affairs, spoke about the possibilities ahead as a UF graduate campus is planned for downtown Jacksonville. During their visit, the provost and deans were able to learn more about the exceptional work each of you do to move medicine forward in Jacksonville and, more importantly, how neighbors benefit from the presence of an academic health center like ours.

The Celebration of Resident and Fellow Education and Research was another tremendous success. This annual event is a display of the meaningful work and research happening on this campus. This year, posters were placed on cubes for viewing, and QR codes also allowed attendees to enlarge the images for a closer look. As part of our celebration this year, two research centers from Gainesville had exciting displays to provide information on resources and how to collaborate through research.
Lastly, I would like to congratulate all graduates beginning the next phase of their medical careers. Thank you for trusting us with your training and for your significant contributions to patient care while in Jacksonville. You have set the standard for residents and fellows who will enter our programs in July.
As always, it is my pleasure to serve each of you as dean. Enjoy this issue of Academic Matters.
Sincerely,
Linda Edwards, MD, FACP
Dean, UF College of Medicine – Jacksonville
